The horse is a being of dynamics and dichotomies. Their blood pumps with adrenaline and impulse as their feet press off the ground, but their tenderness and common curiosity are equally as present in their everyday expressions. Through the studies of motion, stillness, distance, and closeness, I look to further understand the complex back and forth that makes up the unique temperament and personalities of the equine.
Inspired by traditional equestrian portraiture, analog processes, and the horse’s role in photography’s history.
An Ode to Sallie
Inspired by the legendary run of Sallie Gardner, owned by Leland Stanford, and photographed by Eadweard Muybridge.
More commonly known as ‘The Horse in Motion,’ Muybridge’s photographs have solidified themselves within photographic and cinema history, with the horse at the center. Utilizing modern mirrorless technology, coupled with historic alternative processes, we can return to this critical point in history and honor the understanding it has brought us of the horse and of the world around us.
